Tailor-made training by College helps boost skills in hotel industry

Success in tailor-made training provided for business by Uxbridge College was celebrated when hotel workers picked up certificates at an awards ceremony.

Skills shortages in the hospitality industry around Heathrow Airport are being tackled with the help of Uxbridge College, and around 160 employees collected achievement certificates at the event on 14 November.

The staff working in hotels, pubs and restaurants boosted their skills in areas including food hygiene, hospitality and catering, English language, management, door supervision, customer service and IT skills.

The event took place at the Renaissance London Heathrow Hotel, in Bath Road, Hounslow, which itself had put 53 staff on courses and was one of 22 businesses which took part.

The training mainly took place at the businesses where learners worked, and was just one example of the wide range of work-based courses offered by the College to industry.

Rachel Davies, College Principal, congratulated everyone involved in the awards and said: "Increasingly our courses are offered through employers to employees to assist them in developing work skills and relevant qualifications. These awards demonstrate how building partnerships can bring enormous benefits to both employers and employees."

The training was largely funded through £203,427 from Hillingdon Council's section 106 funds, with £146,500 from the London Development Agency, part of the Mayor of London's office.
