Big red success for fundraising students

Students at Uxbridge College joined the likes of Catherine Tate and Tony Blair and raised an amazing £1,016.46 for the charity Comic Relief.

Events included Beauty Therapy students offering a bright red manicure in exchange for donations - and staff clubbed together to collect £5 to persuade Leroy Beckford (19) to have his nails painted.

During his manicure Leroy, who is studying motor vehicle maintenance, said: "I am not enjoying it and I'm going to take it off straight away - but I couldn't say no, after all, it is for charity."

Fundraising events held for the charity in and around this year's Red Nose Day on 16 March - dubbed The Big One -included:

* Picking up M&Ms with chopsticks
* Sales of cakes baked by Catering and Hospitality students
* Guessing the number of sweets in the jar
* Guessing the teddy's date of birth
* Raffle with prizes including lunch at Lifestyles and Hair/Beauty treatments by trainees
* Curry day held on 19 March by Basic Education Group B students.

Most of the fun was organized by the Student Executive Council with the help of Student Support.

Beatrice James, Treasurer of the Student Council, said: "It was a very enjoyable day and great to take part in something that was for charity."

Comic Relief, which this year has raised more than £40,000,000, works to improve the lives of people living with poverty and injustice in the UK and Africa.
