College students celebrate university achievements

Students put on gowns and mortar boards to celebrate after winning university-level qualifications - at College.

Around 60 people from Uxbridge College graduated in HNCs (Higher National Certificates), HNDs (Higher National Diplomas) and Foundation Degrees at the ceremony on 31 October.

These Higher Education qualifications in engineering, computing, business, and care management improve career prospects, and can also give graduates the option to enter university in the second or third years.

Naing Win Hlaing, from Southall, is starting a BSc Honours degree in Electronic Communication at Thames Valley University in the third year after achieving distinctions in his HND in Engineering (Electrical/Electronic.)

Naing, who is also an electronic technician at Uxbridge College, said: "I am very proud of my achievements. It gives me opportunities if I am educated and qualified."

Like Naing, graduate Zaw Tun Aung (26), has joined a degree course in the third year - he has now joined a BEng Hons in Electrical/Electronic Engineering at the University of Sunderland after achieving his HND.

Zaw Tun said: "I would definitely recommend studying this way. The lecturers are very friendly and helpful. I am very proud and pleased to be starting my degree in the third year."

Kerisha Francois (26), from Ickenham, who collected her Foundation Degree in Care Management from Chairman of Governors Alasdair MacLeod, said: "I am very pleased with my results and am now going on to start a BSc Honours degree in Psychology at Buckinghamshire New University. I was really encouraged to follow my interest in psychology by my tutor at Uxbridge College."

Speaking at the ceremony at Brunel University, Principal Laraine Smith congratulated all the students on their achievements.

She told the graduates: "It is certainly no mean feat to complete a Higher National Certificate, a Higher National Diploma, or a Foundation Degree. All of you have put in a huge amount of work, some while holding down demanding jobs, or looking after your families - or both.

"With HNDs and Foundation Degrees the equivalent of up to two years study at university, and university debt at an average of £6,000 a year, studying at higher level locally is becoming increasingly more attractive.

"Uxbridge College really is the university on your doorstep and many of our students, including some of you here today, will go on to join - or have already joined - university in the second or third year as a result of your achievements.

"I hope and I believe that your achievements in Higher Education will continue to stand you and our economy - and Uxbridge College - in good stead far into the future."
