Uxbridge Hairdressing StudentsStudents from Uxbridge College competed in heats to go through to the next round of the National Association of Hairdressers and Therapists competitionSome of the best trainee hairdressers at Uxbridge College are going through to the southern heats of a national competition.

The winners of in-house heats run under national rules gained places in the next round of the annual AHT (Association of Hairdressers and Therapists) UK Trainee Competition.

Around 160 students took part in the two rounds of in-house heats, during which they had to style and cut hair in timed conditions. They were judged on their skills as they were working, as well as on the final result.

The 23 winners are training for NVQ qualifications in hairdressing at Levels 1, 2 and 3, as full-time students. They will compete against students from colleges all over the South of England at Bexley College on 10 February. Winners from that heat will enter the national final, which takes place in Blackpool in March.

Derry Moody, Head of Hair and Beauty, said: “The winners had to be really focused, well-prepared and show a high level of skill for their stage of training. I was really impressed by some of the work they produced, especially given the conditions they were working under. They showed real creativity as well as excellent technical ability.

“Taking part in competitions like this not only proves trainees can perform under pressure – which of course they will have to do when they work in a salon – but also gives them a unique learning opportunity as they prepare for the competition. Can’t wait to see how they get on in the next round.”

* The training salons at Uxbridge College’s Hayes Community Campus are open to the public, and offer a wide range of hair and beauty treatments at reasonable rates. Please call 01895 853666 to make an appointment or for more information.
