Students at Uxbridge College have been celebrating their GCSE results: top achiever Luisa Lacatusu pictured with physics lecturer Jack Harris.Uxbridge College students are celebrating some great GCSE results – both in terms of overall performances and individual results.
Particular strengths at higher grade A*-C this year include:
* Excellent ICT results at A*-C with success rates at 98% - up 5% on 2010
* Improvement in English Literature at A*-C with success rates at 83% up from 69% the previous year
* Improvement in maths at A*-C by 2% up to 54%
* Chemistry has shown a further improvement with A*-C now at 75%
Student stories include:
* Fiona Harding (21), who took an unusual route in education – having previously done a childcare qualification at Uxbridge College and worked in the industry, she came back to do maths and science GCSEs. Having achieved A*, A and B grades this year she is now going to Durham University to do a Foundation year in physics, which will lead her on to a full degree.
* Sandra Zielinska (19) and Patrycja Zielinska (18) (not related although they share the same surname, which is a common one in Poland). Despite being native Polish speakers they achieved strong results taking GCSEs in English. Both will be staying on to study at A level.
* Bianca Chua (17), who gained the highest grades at Uxbridge College with four A* (maths, biology, chemistry, physics) and one A (English).
* Kadija Maimoon (18), who achieved A* grades in maths and ICT and As in English language, English literature and biology. She will be staying on at Uxbridge College to do A levels.
* Luke Joannou (17) and Jack Gordon (19), who re-sat GCSEs and achieved marked improvements on their original results. Both plan to do A levels.
Because students at Uxbridge College take their exams in one year - either to improve existing results or because they are sitting GCSEs for the first time - they take up to five subjects, instead of the numbers taken at school. The overall pass rate at grades A*-G was 98%.
Dr Darrell DeSouza, Vice Principal for Curriculum and Standards at Uxbridge College, based in Park Road, Uxbridge, said:
"We’ve had some exceptional individual performers with very high grades this year as well as marked improvements in some key subjects.
“It has been a particularly strong year for ICT and English literature.
“Uxbridge College is unusual in offering GCSEs at post-16 years and this keeps the door open for a wide range of pathways to further study and professional training.
“I would like to congratulate all our students this year. It is an intensive process to take five GCSEs in a single year and with the excellent teaching and support students get at Uxbridge College, they can achieve really impressive results.”
