The athlete, who hopes to qualify for Team GB for the London 2012 Olympics, urged the AS level and A2 level students to make the most of the time left before the end of their courses  – 23 college days for AS level students and 30 for A2.

She said: “You can do whatever you want – 23 days is a lot, make every one count. You have been in education for 13 years and what you get at the end of it is what you have traded your 13 years for.  I have always said that my life is my responsibility – no excuses.”

She then handed out certificates of achievement along with Dr Beverley Crooks, Uxbridge College’s Chair of Corporation. Dr Crooks and Ms Asante both work on projects to support young people from all cultural backgrounds in improving their life opportunities.

As well as competing in international athletics, Ms Asante has worked as a model, presented children’s television and is now studying Law at Brunel University.

Dr Alastair Mullins, Head of the Academy at Uxbridge College, said: “Zara was a fantastic guest whose visit gave our students some extra motivation at a tough time in their studies. She has set a great example of someone who has made the most of her opportunities.”
