Highlights this year include:

• Improvement in pass rate at grades A*-G from 97% to 99%
• 100% pass rate at grades A*-G in English language, English literature, ICT, chemistry and physics
• Strong performance in sciences including physics at A*-C, up 8% from 2011 at 69%
• English literature at A*-C with achievement rate of 75%.

Successful students, out of the 329 at the College taking GCSEs, included:

Sakina Husen (20), who achieved A* grades in ICT and English and As in maths, biology and English literature. She now plans to stay on to study at A level. Sakina said: “I am shocked but happy – I wasn’t expecting to do this well.”

Shenaz Shabir (21), who got A grades in maths, biology, chemistry, physics and English. Shenaz said: “I had to get my teacher to open my results I was so nervous. I really can’t believe it  - I’ve got five As! I’m so excited. I did work hard but I didn’t know how the final grades would be. I am going to do A levels at Uxbridge College now and want to be a doctor.”

Deepa Pradeep Kumar (17), who got A grades in maths, biology, chemistry, physics and English. She said: “It was really hard waiting for the results – I was so nervous.  But I am really happy. I never thought I would do so well. I’m going to stay on to take A levels at Uxbridge College and hope to study medicine.”

Sahil Shah (17), got A* grades in maths and chemistry, an A in physics, and Bs in biology and English. He said: “I am happy with the results although I hoped to get more As! The teachers were great and they helped me a lot, and I kept my head down and worked hard. I am going to take maths and science A levels and perhaps do maths or engineering at university.”

Dr Darrell DeSouza, Vice Principal for Curriculum and Standards at Uxbridge College, based in Park Road, Uxbridge, said:

"I would like to congratulate all our students this year. We have had some excellent individual performers and a number of improvements including a higher pass rate at grades A*-G.

“It has been a strong year for sciences with the increase in physics passes at grades A*-C as well as good performances in chemistry, and also for ICT and English literature.

“Uxbridge College is one of only a few further education colleges offering GCSEs and we find it is very valuable to students offering flexibility in progression pathways. These qualifications are well thought of by both employers and educational establishments, as they open doors to a number of options including A levels, vocational study and the world of work.”

Because students at Uxbridge College take their GCSEs in one year - either to improve existing results or for the first time - they usually do five subjects, instead of the higher numbers taken in schools.
