Game of Thrones IMG 6343Students found out more about how shows like Game of Thrones are broadcast to millions of viewers, during their recent trip to Sky’s UK headquarters.

The group from the BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering learned about the technology and processes used in delivering viewing to the company’s 12m customers in the UK and Ireland, when they visited the studios in West London.

They also took a turn on the king’s seat in Westeros - the coveted ‘Iron Throne’ - where civil war rages in the cult series Game of Thrones. HBO’s fantasy show commands 2.2m viewers in the UK alone on Sky broadcast and on-demand services.

Following the visit, the students said: “The visit was motivational and inspiring and we learned a great deal, especially about the live broadcasting side of Sky which was very interesting. We would have never known how much time and effort it takes to do the job of transmitting all the information to the users, of how much went on behind the scenes. The experience was useful and fun and we really appreciated the opportunity.”

Dr Nagham Saeed, Electronics lecturer, said: "The learners really enjoyed the experience and learned a lot about the communication technology implemented in Sky studios."

The visit gave students the chance to see state-of-the-art transmission and receiving devices, techniques and equipment, which linked the telecommunication unit of their course, which covers a range of communication technologies.
