  • Applicants will be interviewed to assess their suitability for the course
  • Adequate language, literacy and numeracy skills will be assessed
  • Suitable work experience may be considered
  • You must provide two references.

Who is the course for

This course is for school leavers wishing to enter either the hairdressing or beauty industries.

Course Content

Students will learn the following:
  • Introduction to the hair & beauty sector
  • Presenting a professional image in the salon
  • Skincare
  • Handcare
  • Applying basic make-up
  • Themed face painting
  • The art of photographic make-up
  • Shampooing and conditioning
  • Colour in the hair & beauty sector
  • Plaiting and twisting hair
  • Temporary hair colouring
  • The art of dressing hair.
Students will also study Functional Skills and the Personal Development qualification.

Study Methods

The College has links with local employers and west end salons.

All students complete at least one weeks work placement whilst on the course.

How is the course assessed

Understanding of theory work is assessed by written questions, projects and assignments, which are completed at the end of each unit and also by oral questioning during practical situations.

Assessment of practical skills is ongoing while working in the training salons.

Students may take part in various team building activities.

Where next - Further Studies

NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy or NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing or Intermediate Apprenticeship in Hair & Beauty.

Where next - Job Opportunities

Potential employment as a junior therapist in beauty salons, hotels and sports and leisure complexes.
