Entry Requirements

  • Two GCSEs at grade E/F or above, one of which must be English language
  • A reference from your school and/or employer is required
  • Every application is carefully considered and places may be awarded in recognition of experience in the childcare sector
All candidates will be screened for suitability to work with children through The Criminal Records Bureau.

Who is the course for

The course is designed for anyone interested in pursuing a career with children aged 0-8 in a variety of work settings.

Course Content

The course is designed to provide an introduction to childcare. To work with children you will need to go on to study a Level 2 course. You will be considered for a Level 2 course if you achieve well throughout the course, showing academic and personal ability to study at a higher level.

  • Personal development
  • Communication skills
  • Individual rights and responsibilities
  • Parenting awareness
  • Dealing with problems in daily life
  • Human growth and development
  • Caring for children: physical, emotional and intellectual development.
The work in these units will also be supported with group and personal tutorials.
During the course, students will attend a two week work placement either in a nursery/infant class or a day nursery, where they will be able to practise their developing practical skills in all aspects of childcare and education, working alongside a supervisor.

Students spend 17 hours each week in College and learn underpinning knowledge in a variety of childcare and education based topics.

Students will also study Functional Skills as part of this course.

Those students who achieve a Distinction, good reports for attendance, are punctual throughout the year and have proven aptitude may progress on to Level 2 and then into employment.
