Entry Requirements

  • Two GCSEs in English and mathematics at grade D or above.

Who is the course for

This course is for all those who wish to work in the Children and Young Peoples workforce and will cover a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas working in childrens workforce setting including early years and social care. It covers the age range from birth to 19 years and is made up of a of mandatory and optional units which are based on a knowledge and skills. This course contains optional units from the Level 3 Diploma for learners who wish to undertake more challenging study.

Course Content

The course covers the following mandatory units:

  • Introduction to communication in health, social care or children & young peoples settings
  • Introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care or children & young peoples settings
  • Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children & young peoples settings
  • Child & young person development
  • Contribute to the support of child & young person development
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children & young people
  • Contribute to children & young peoples health & safety
  • Support positive children and young peoples positive behaviour
  • Contribute to the support of the positive environments for children & young people
  • Understand partnership working in services for children & young people
  • Paediatric emergency first aid
  • Managing paediatric illness & injury
  • Maintain & support relationships with children & young people

  • Support children & young people with disabilities and special educational needs
  • Support children & young peoples play & leisure
  • Support children & young people at meal & snack times
  • Contribute to the support of childrens communication, language & literacy
  • Contribute to the support of childrens creative development
  • Introduction to duty of care in health, social care or children & young peoples setting
  • Understand child & young person development
  • Promote child & young person development
  • Understand how to safeguard the well being of children & young people
  • Support children & young peoples health & safety
  • Develop positive relationships with children, young people & others involved in their care

Study Methods

How is the course assessed

All units are internally assessed. Assessment enables the learners workplace practice to provide evidence for individual units as well as the whole qualification. Methods of assessment could include:
  • Inference of knowledge from direct observation of practice
  • Witness evidence when directed by the sector skills assessment strategy
  • Reflection on own practice in real work situations
  • Written assignments
  • Learners own plans and written records
  • Task set by CACHE for knowledge learning outcomes only
The qualification will be pass or refer and all the assessment criteria of the chosen units must be achieved in order to obtain a pass.

Specific job roles may include:

  • playgroups workers
  • childrens centres staff
  • personnel in day nurseries, nursery schools and nursery or reception classes in primary schools
