Entry Requirements

  • An interest in engineering, a commitment to working hard and regular attendance
  • An interview with the tutor, plus a satisfactory reference from school is mandatory
  • A test will be set to position the student within an appropriate group.

Who is the course for

This Foundation Level course is aimed at young people who are interested in electrical and mechanical engineering.

Course Content

You will be required to study the core and vocational specialist units listed below:

Core unit:
  • Working safely in engineering.
Specialist units:
  • Making engineering components using hand tools
  • Using bench/pedestal drilling machines
  • Planning and making a machined product
  • Skills in electronic assembly
  • Wiring electrical circuits and components
  • Routine servicing of electrical/electronic equipment
  • Starting work in engineering
  • Interpreting and using engineering information.
Edexcel BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Supporting Employability & Personal Effectiveness (QCF):
Core unit:
  • Supporting Employability and Personal Effectiveness
Optional units:
  • Searching for a job
  • applying for a job
  • Preparing for an interview
  • Interview skills
  • Working in a team
  • Producing a product
All students will study Functional Skills as part of this course.

Study Methods

A good basic understanding of engineering and its importance in society and business is required. Engineering is taught through relevance based on theory and substantial amount of practical work to develop hands on skills.

How is the course assessed

This qualification is internally assessed but externally verified. The course will be assessed through practical work, assignments, group projects and other activities throughout the year.

Where next - Further Studies

Students will be considered, depending on their attendance, for a place on a full-time course at an appropriate level on successful completion of their course.

Students can seek employment in an engineering environment.
