Entry Requirements

  • Four GCSEs grade D or above, including mathematics, science and English language
or
  • Successful completion of a Foundation Learning course, in a related subject, including English and mathematics
  • A good school report commenting on attendance, punctuality, behaviour and
commitment.

Who is the course for

This course is for young people seeking to gain an understanding of, and the skills required for, the electronics industry.

Course Content

The course comprises of three mandatory units plus five specialist units (this provides a total of 60 credits at Level 2), all of which must be passed to obtain the qualification.

Mandatory units:
  • Working safely and effectively in engineering
  • Interpreting and using engineering information
  • Mathematics for engineering technicians.
Specialist units:
  • Applied electrical and mechanical science for technicians
  • Electronic devices and communication applications
  • Electronic circuit construction
  • Operation and maintenance of electronic systems and components
  • PC hardware and software installation and configuration.
All students will study Functional Skills as part of this course.


Study Methods

Lectures, laboratory/practical work, tutorials, private study periods and assignments.

How is the course assessed

All the units are assessed by course assignments which meet BTEC grading criteria for Pass, Merit and Distinction.

Where next - Further Studies

You can progress onto BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, which can lead on to higher level study at College or university.

Where next - Job Opportunities

The course will prepare students for careers in electrical/electronic engineering including maintenance, manufacturing and technical sales.
