  • Four GCSEs grade D or above, including mathematics, science and English language
or
  • Successful completion of a Foundation Learning course, in a related subject, including English and mathematics
or
  • Related work experience
or
  • City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma
  • A good school report commenting on attendance, punctuality, behaviour and commitment.

Who is the course for

This course is for students who intend to gain an understanding of, and the skills required for, the manufacturing industry.

Course Content

Mandatory units:
  • Working safely and effectively in engineering
  • Interpreting and using engineering information
  • Mathematics for engineering technicians.
Specialist units:
  • Applied electrical and mechanical science for engineering
  • Using computer aided drawing techniques in engineering
  • Selecting and using secondary machining techniques to remove material
  • Electronic circuit construction
  • Application of quality control and measurement in engineering.
All students will study Functional Skills as part of this course.

Text reading, lectures and taking notes in class

How is the course assessed

All units are assessed internally by controlled time tests and course work. The Functional Skills are externally assessed.

Where next - Further Studies

Direct progression to BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (subject to academic performance and attendance).

Where next - Job Opportunities

Employment under the apprenticeship scheme.
