Entry Requirements

You should:
  • Be aged 1618 years and a UK citizen
  • Be highly motivated, looking to develop a career within the aircraft industry and demonstrate excellent attendance, punctuality and behaviour at school or college
  • Have five GCSEs at grade C or above including English, mathematics, design & technology, and a science subject.
You will be required to attend an assessment day and interview at the College.

The British Airways and Uxbridge College Aircraft Maintenance Apprenticeship Programme gives you the opportunity to -

Course Content

The course comprises of three mandatory units and three specialists units all of which must be passed to obtain a Level 2 qualification. There are a further six subsidiary units for the Level 3 qualification.

Level 2:
Engineering Practices core units:
  • Working safely in an engineering environment
  • Working effectively and efficiently in engineering
  • Using and communicating technical information.
Specialist units:
  • Producing mechanical engineering drawing using a CAD system
  • Producing components using hand fitting techniques
  • Producing mechanical assemblies.
Level 3:
Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering

The Level 3 qualification comprises of one mandatory unit, one specialist mandatory unit and four specialist units, all of which must be passed.

Mandatory Unit:
  • Health & safety in the engineering workplace.
Specialist Mandatory unit:
  • Mechanical principles and applications.
Specialist units:
  • Mathematics for engineering technicians
  • Properties and applications of engineering materials
  • Engineering drawing for technicians
  • Engineering secondary and finishing techniques.
Work experience:
  • Two weeks at British Airways
  • A further one week later on in the course if student is selected by British Airways.

Study Methods

Lectures, laboratory/practical work, tutorials, private study periods, projects and assignments.

How is the course assessed

Through a Portfolio of Evidence (which include assignments, practical (exercises), and controlled Tests.

Where next - Further Studies

Study on a variety of other engineering related qualifications.

This qualification could also allow progression onto other related sector qualifications.

Where next - Job Opportunities

Students may work in a range of engineering jobs including:
Aircraft engineer technician
Equipment installation technician
Engineering maintenance technician
Production control technician.
