Entry Requirements

A good understanding of Engine cycles and ideally a Level 2 Qualification in the Motor Vehicle Sector or experience in a garage.

A good level of English is required.

Who is the course for

Suitable for those who have a basic understanding of the electrical systems of cars through a course e.g. IMI Introduction to Auto-Electrics, or from working on these systems, who would like to enhance their skills in the identification and repair of electrical/electronic faults and performance issues, using specialist diagnostic equipment. This course would also be useful for those attending or aiming to take the C&G 4270-13 Level 3 Diploma.

Course Content

Week 1

Health and Safety intro and test, course outline, tour and introductions

How the engine works four stroke cycle and anagram to reinforce engine components.

Week 2

Misfire electrical – How to check and test coil, fuel, spark. Live data, Noid light testing

Week 3

Misfire mechanical, Compression testing wet and dry, Cylinder Leakage Testing, valve overlap, firing order

Week 4

Sensor readings, Active, Passive, All Sensors

Week 5

Using meters AC DC Resistance and continuity testing

Week 6

Reading DTC’s and interpreting data- live data reading and diagnostic tool actuation tests

Week 7

Wiring Diagrams, circuits, Fault Finding

Week 8

Can bus understanding and multiplexing

Week 9

Rolling road workshop, power graph and diagnosis

Week 10

Reinforce all objectives learned and Q&A.

Study Methods

Lectures, tutorials, practical workshops and assignments.

Suitable safety boots and overalls will be required to carry out practical activities in the workshop.

The candidate must provide their own boots and overalls.

Suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) is compulsory in the workshop and may be purchased from Amazon, B&Q or locally at All Weather Corner, Hayes, Tel: 020 8573 0300.

Please note the overalls should be navy colour and are described as workshop or warehouse coats at many outlets, Safety boots are also required.
