Who is the course for

This course is aimed at students who are looking for an introduction to the sciences and who are hoping to continuing studying sciences at a higher level. Students may have few or no formal qualifications.

Course Content

The course includes aspects of biology, chemistry and physics. The course will involve a lot of practical work and will enable students to develop their numeracy and literacy skilss.

Examples of units that are included in the Diploma include:
  • Skills and techniques for chemistry investigations
  • The study of living systems
  • The nature and applications of energy, waves and radiation
  • Causes of disease and maintaining health
  • Forensic detection

The course is a mixture of laboratory-based practical work supported by theory

The course is assessed through coursework

Where next - Further Studies

The course leads directly to the 1-year BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Science. This leads to our 2-year BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Forensic Science and many students progress to University from this course. It is also possible for students that do exceptionally well to progress onto our GCSE programme.

Where next - Job Opportunities

Students may be able to gain employment as an entry-level science technician
