Entry Requirements

  • Three GCSEs at grade E or above, including English
  • You will need to provide a good school report/ reference.
Students who have been out of education for a while do not need some of the above
ormal qualifications if their background and experience are appropriate. Students should also be passionate about sport and be prepared to undertake a variety of sporting and fitness activities.

Who is the course for

This Foundation Level course is for those interested in a sport or fitness related career, or keen to progress into a coaching environment and develop new skills.

Course Content

Students will study the following modules:
  • Taking part in sport
  • Assisting at a sport or active leisure event
  • Improving own fitness
  • Risks and hazards in sport and active leisure
  • Taking part in exercise and fitness
  • How the body works
  • Planning own fitness programme
  • Assisting a leader of sports or active leisure activities to plan and deliver an activity
  • Physical activities for children
  • Preparing for work placement
  • Learning from work placement.
Students will also study Functional Skills. You may also have the opportunity to take various Level 1 coaching qualifications (at an additional cost).

Study Methods

Lectures, workshops, group work and practical sessions. The course has a high practical element.

How is the course assessed

Assignments throughout the course include reports, projects, presentations, practical work, oral work and time constrained assignments.

Where next - Further Studies

Students who gain a pass within the course, complete work to a high standard and have excellent attendance and punctuality could progress onto the Level 2 Diploma in Sport.

A variety of leisure roles within the sports snd health and fitness industry.
