Immigration and Work
Applying for a student visa
You are required to apply for a visa if you are a non-EU/EEA national. Allow plenty of time to apply for your visa - it can take up to three months from your initial application so it is best to do this as early as possible. Click here to find out where you can apply.
All visa applications will be assessed under the new points based system. There are 5 categories and you will need to make your application under Tier 4 through the General route or through the Child Student route if you are under 18. You will need to obtain 40 points. They are broken down in the following ways:
30 points = if you are in receipt of a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) number from Uxbridge College.
10 points = if you show evidence that you have enough money to pay your tuition fees and can cover the cost of living in the UK. If you are studying for a course that is longer than 9 months, you will need to show your tuition fees for the first year, living costs of £5400 plus £400 per month per dependent up to a maximum of 12 months. If you are studying for a course that is 9 months or less, you will need to show your tuition fees, living costs of £600 per month plus £400 per month per dependent up to a maximum of 12 months.
If you are a sponsored student (government, British Council, company), a letter will be requested to confirm this.
Renewing student visas
Visa renewals will also fall under the new system. To meet the maintenance requirement, you will need to show any outstanding tuition fees plus living costs for at least two months (£600 x 2 months = 1200). We advise that you apply one month before your visa expires.
Please keep checking this web page for further updates.
In the meantime further information about the changes to the UK immigration system, the application procedure, costs and maintenance requirements can be found on the UK Border Agency website. Click here.
Identity Cards for International Students
When applying to extend your stay in the UK, you will be requested to make an appointment to receive an Identity Card for yourself (and any dependents). All those applying for further leave to remain under the above category will need to enrol their biometric details (finger prints and facial image), at one of the seven Public Enquiry Offices in the UK. For further information about Identity Cards for Foreign Nationals please click here.
Travel around Europe
Whilst studying at Uxbridge College, you may wish to travel around Europe in your Christmas/Easter breaks. You should check with the embassy/consulate of the country you wish to visit to find out whether someone of your nationality requires a visa to travel there.
Work
International students can work up to 10 hours per week during term-time and full-time during holidays, a work placement or internship. We can also help you find work through our Student, Training and Employment Project (STEP). Click here for more information.
