Beauty Therapy students taking part in Mardis Gras celebrations.Pancakes and cane rows were on the menu at an event to celebrate Shrove Tuesday.
Catering and hospitality students cooked around 120 filled pancakes for hungry customers, and beauty therapy students offered hair styling, face painting and manicures.
Many of the beauty clients chose to have small plaits in their hair known as cane rows, or corn rows. Cane rows have their origin in African culture which has also played a key part in the way in which the Mardis Gras - another name for the Christian festival Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day - is now celebrated.
The event took place at Uxbridge College’s Hayes Community Campus, home to the hair and beauty salons, and training kitchens.
Derry Moody, Head of Hair, Beauty and Hospitality, said: “This event gave our trainees a chance to practice their skills on fellow students and members of staff, as well as helping them learn what Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day and the Mardis Gras are all about. Vocational courses aren’t just about what happens in the classroom – this kind of learning is all about real life and seeing how your skills fit in the real world.”
