Laraine Smith, Principal of Uxbridge College and Alan Hayes, News Editor of the Uxbridge Gazette, are calling for your nominations for this year's Local Heroes competition. The search is on again as this year’s Local Heroes awards are launched by the Uxbridge Gazette and Leader, and Uxbridge College.
Our annual competition recognises the incredible commitment, dedication and bravery shown by unsung heroes from across Hillingdon, who have put others' needs before their own or fought against the odds.
Category winners will receive a trophy and £200, while the Hero of Hillingdon – chosen from the five category winners - will win an additional £500. Runners up will each receive £50.
So if you know someone who deserves recognition, nominate them online (http://www.uxbridgegazette.co.uk/west-london-news/heroes/2012/04/16/nomination-form-for-hillingdon-local-heroes-2012-113046-30771036/) or by using the form featured each week in the Uxbridge Gazette and Leader. The closing date for entries is Friday 8 June at 5.30pm, and the gala awards night will be held on Thursday 12 July at Uxbridge College’s Hayes Community Campus.
Anyone who lives, works or volunteers in Hillingdon can be nominated in any of the following five categories: Outstanding Young Person; Star Carer; Courageous Citizen; Fabulous Fundraiser and Community Champion.
Last year the Hero of Hillingdon was named as 10-year-old Kane Thomas, who took care of his mum Roma after she became ill with Bell’s Palsy.
Roma said: “It was wonderful that he won the award – it was a terrible time when I was ill but Kane was so good. It was great that he was recognised by the community for all his hard work.”
Laraine Smith, Principal of Uxbridge College, said: “We are very proud to be joining the Uxbridge Gazette and Leader again for this year’s Local Heroes competition. Our community is at the heart of everything we do here at Uxbridge College, and this special event offers a wonderful chance to recognise some of its unsung heroes. I look forward to seeing what this year’s nominations bring and would urge everyone to get thinking about who they want to see recognised this year.”
Alan Hayes, Gazette News Editor, said: “Local Heroes always produces a wealth of fascinating and inspirational stories which we love to tell. Please take this opportunity to make sure a true, unsung hero gets the recognition they deserve.”
Uxbridge College and Uxbridge Gazette staff can nominate their Local Heroes - however they are not eligible to be nominated themselves.
