Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Computing (Games and Virtual Reality)
GCSE English and Maths at grade C (grade 4/5) or above (or equivalent) and a UCAS Tariff score of 48 from a full Level 3 qualification such as BTEC, A Level or an Access course.
Some knowledge of programming with an interest in virtual/augmented reality would be advantageous.
Who is the course for
This course is for those who wish to pursue a career in development for the next generation of applications, games and video content focused on virtual, augmented realities. Students will be taught how to use industry-standard tools and techniques to design and implement a range of games and applications based on use-cases from industry which include VR/AR games and applications, WebVR/AR development and 360 degree video/stereoscopic video with post production visual effects.
On this course, you will cover a wide range of practical development skills. The foundational skills are covered in the first year. See the course handbook for a full list of modules.
You will be working on augmented & virtual reality games and applications based on a range of technologies including Unity and Unreal games engines which require no more than a mobile phone to experience, through to “high-end experiences” using the “room-scale” HTC Vive VR headset and VR1 backpack. You will also produce 360 degree video & stereoscopic content, implement post processing effects in NUKE software as well as learn 3D modelling and programming.
Showcasing your work to audiences and assessing their feedback will also be a key component of the course. Participation in Hackathons and games-jam events are embedded into the course schedule.
This course is classroom taught, with a range of lectures, group work, presentations and workshops. Supplemental online/self study is also recommended.
How is the course assessed
Assessment is through a series of assignments and projects (individual and group based) leading to a major project in the second year of study.
Where next - Further Studies
Upon successful completion and approval, students will have an opportunity to progress onto the final year of a degree in Computer Science related course, as the fundamental qualification you will study is in Computing.

The virtual/augmented realities sector is set to grow over the next five years - the industry use cases already span training, architectural visualisation, gaming to engineering with opportunities arising as the specific industry skills needs arise. The range of skills covered on the course will ensure you will be equipped with the necessary expertise required by Industry today and in the future.

Students will attend college for 15 hours - over three days per week. Student are expected to complete approximately 18 hours per week of independent study (i.e. on research and completing assignments).
