Entry Requirements
4 GCSEs grade A*-C (grade 9 - 4) including English and maths. You will also need to provide an excellent school report/reference.
Who is the course for
This course is for those interested in a sport or fitness related career, or who are keen to progress onto a sports studies higher education course.
Course Content
A broad basis of study for the sport sector. You will learn the principles of * anatomy and physiology of fitness,
- sports coaching,
- sports development and
- fitness testing for sport and exercise plus participate in practical team sport and a work experience placement to put your skills into action.
There will be the opportunity to apply for our substantial industry placement programme working with our employers and to complete work experience. You will also have the opportunity to gain industry recognised sports coaching qualifications each year:
- 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching (Sport and Physical Activity) with the Extended Certificate. This course provides learners with the skills and knowledge to be able to plan, deliver and evaluate linked and progressive coaching sessions with the potential to seek employment in a coaching role. In the second year, you will have the opportunity to gain the Level 3 Qualification in Sports Leadership (SL3). This enables successful learners to independently lead purposeful and enjoyable sport/physical activity, delivering leadership sessions to varying groups, such as community, disability and children groups.
Study Methods
Lectures, workshops, group work, practical sessions, field trips and work experience.
How is the course assessed
External assessment through written examinations in 3 units (2 in year 1). Internal assessments on all other units to include reports, projects, presentations, practical work, oral work and time constrained assignments.

Progress from the National Extended Certificate to the Level 3 National Diploma in Sport. You may progress onto a higher education course.
