There are no set entry requirements. Before starting the course, you will be assessed for suitability and to agree the level you can study. Prior qualifications will be used where appropriate.
Who is the course for
These are part-time courses suitable for adults (over 19 years old) that have been out of full-time education for some time. Functional Skills is for students who need to gain a solid understanding of the basic mathematical skills needed for further study, the workplace or everyday life. Everyday decisions are often based on mathematical information. Developing your maths skills will help you to make the best choices
You will work on studying maths problems set in practical, real-life contexts. You will be identifying, analysing and interpreting mathematical information within a variety of situations. This will involve all areas of maths, including:
- measure, shape and space
- handling data
The course is delivered over 10 weeks of classroom taught lessons for 2.25 hours a week. You will be expected to combine this with a further 2 hours of guided study a week. At the end of the course, you will take an exam. At both levels this will involve both non-calculator and calculator papers.
How is the course assessed
Exam – Two papers in one sitting. Non-calculator (25%) and Calculator (75%)
Where next - Further Studies
On successful completion of Level 1, you can look at either a Level 2 Functional Skill or possibly GCSE.
